The George

The George is a relaxed pub & restaurant with comfortable leather sofas, real ales and outstanding food, situated in the historic market town of Chichester.

Dating back to the early 18th century, The George stands next to the site of the original north walls gatehouse and is conveniently located just 500 yards from the Old Town Cross and Cathedral.

Offering good locally sourced food, a calm and efficient approach to service, The George situates you in an ideal spot from which to discover the West Sussex coast and countryside and is only a five-minute drive from Goodwood racecourse.

Take our Virtual Pub Tour

The bar serves real ales on tap and a guest ale we change regularly.

The busy bar has the warm, friendly atmosphere of a ‘proper’ pub. There are open fires, numerous ales on hand pump and a carefully curated wine by the glass.

Our back bar boasts a great range of spirits, with 24 speciality gins. The open log fire warms and welcomes in the winter months and the decking garden beckons in the summer.

Dogs are welcome in the bar area but are not allowed in the inside dining areas (with the exception of guide dogs.)

Under 18years are not permitted in the bar area or garden after 8.30pm

The dining room at The George is very special.

We give our own take on British pub classic dishes making use of our great local produce, fish & meats.

Diners enjoy the light and airy space of the conservatory, which has large double doors that open out onto the decked courtyard for alfresco dining in the warmer months. Dishes are prepared passionately and imaginatively by our new head chef and his dedicated team.

Our menu at The George comprises of great breakfasts, local fish dishes, gourmet burgers, pub classics and Sunday Roasts.

Booking is recommended in either our conservatory dining room or bar area, however the same menu is available in the Bar (and in good weather on the sun decking garden).

Bed and Breakfast

Ten en-suite bedrooms are situated in the converted old stable block across the courtyard from the pub. They are cozy and individually styled. All of them have been designed to have their own unique character and to be sympathetic to the age of the building. The ideal place to stay for both the business traveller and the leisure visitor

All rooms feature:

  • Flat screen TVs
  • En-suite shower rooms
  • Coffee & tea making facilities
  • Free wi-fi
  • Free Cooked breakfast – served 07.30 – 09.30am

Although we do not have parking facilities on the premises, we are very close to the Chichester Festival Theatre car park which is just around the corner from us. It is currently £7 for the day and its free over-night. You can park outside The George on North Street for free between 5.00pm to 9.00am before it changes to pay and display between 9.00am – 5.00pm.
